Pilates

Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates. Pilates first time applied his method in England around 1912, but it wasn’t established before 1926, when he and his wife Clara opened the first Pilates studio in New York. They offered classes of the new pilates alternative way of exercise. Soon their studio gowned high reputation mainly between the communities of dancers of America. The method was spread even further when Pilates students began to teach in Los Angeles and Hollywood.

Pilates combines of assembly movement with proper breathing. The purpose is physical and mental health of the individual. Performed either on a mat with props such as mini balls, fit balls, bands, weights and magic rings, or with specific equipment that Joseph designed, as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda chair and Barrel which use resistance springs.

The Pilates had studied many different types of exercise, such as boxing, skiing, swimming, gymnastics and more. He believed in the principle of healthy mind in healthy body and so his method combines body and spirit. He taught his method very specifically to each client. Therefore in pilates class, exercises are selected according to ones needs.

Six are the basic principles of Pilates

  1. Center - energize the “power house”, abdominals, and connect to yourself
  2. Concentration - Bring the attention inwards, engage the appropriate muscles
  3. Control - every breath, every move, every muscle
  4. Precision - perform the exercises with absolute precision and consciousness
  5. Breathing - maintain a breath pattern without pause
  6. Flow – move and breath with harmony and grace

Pilates is suitable for any practitioner who wants to deepen his knowledge on human movement. It helps to deal with injuries, improves body awareness and general health but also peace of mind.
